Brahman — The Heat-Adapted Giant
Brahman — The Heat-Adapted Giant
The Brahman is a large cattle breed with a completely different appearance from the European giants. Its most recognizable feature is the prominent hump over the shoulders, accompanied by loose skin, large ears, and a distinctive dewlap.
According to the American Brahman Breeders Association, mature bulls in good condition generally weigh about 1,600–2,200 pounds, or roughly 725–998 kilograms.
The Brahman’s importance goes beyond its weight. These cattle are famous for their ability to tolerate hot climates and challenging tropical conditions. Their genetics have been used extensively in crossbreeding programs around the world.
Their loose skin, short coat, and other physical characteristics help them cope with heat and insects.
A mature Brahman bull can therefore look enormous without necessarily being one of the heaviest European beef breeds.
