Belgian Blue — The Muscle Champion
The Belgian Blue looks dramatically different from many other large cattle breeds. Its most famous characteristic is its extraordinary muscular development.
The breed is associated with the “double-muscling” phenotype, a condition linked to changes affecting the myostatin pathway. This can produce unusually large muscles and a very high muscle-to-bone ratio. Belgian Blue is one of the breeds commonly associated with this trait.
Adult Belgian Blue bulls typically weigh around 1,100–1,250 kilograms, although animals exceeding 1,300 kilograms are not unusual.
Instead of appearing exceptionally tall like the Chianina, a Belgian Blue often looks extremely broad and thick. Its shoulders, back, hindquarters, and thighs can appear almost sculpted.
This makes the Belgian Blue one of the most visually recognizable cattle breeds in the world.
